Residents petition Rapid City Council to re-open road near Walmart

Two years after the Rapid City Council voted to close a section of road near the Stumer Road Walmart, some residents in the area want it reopened.

People who live on Stumer Road and Enchantment Road showed up at Tuesday's Public Works meeting to argue their side. Those who live on Stumer Road want the section to remain closed due to the noise caused by endless traffic to the superstore.

"I'm a tax payer like anybody. I'm a part of that community like anybody, but like a number of us we're at ground zero. We are literally impacted directly by that traffic at that location. Unlike the folks that are up on Enchantment Road," said Jay Alderman who lives on Stumer Street.

More than 100 residents on Enchantment Road signed a petition to reopen the road due to safety concerns.

"If we were to have a major fire or other disaster up in that area, and we had to evacuate very quickly, the roads coming in and out of that area are very very limited," said Kerdall Remboldt who lives on Enchantment Road.

The Public Works committee voted four-to-zero to send a proposal to reopen that section of Stumer Road to the full city council.
