911 call says murder, bombs, & hostages; Moody County officers find it's a hoax

WARD, S.D. (AP) _ Law enforcement authorities in eastern South Dakota are investigating a hoax emergency call that resulted in almost two dozen officers being dispatched to a home.
KSFY-TV (http://bit.ly/1rAVjtc ) reports that a caller claiming to be a 16-year-old boy from Ward told emergency operators in Moody County that he had shot one of his parents, had three family members held hostage and had rigged the house with a bomb that would explode if the doors were opened.
Sheriff Troy Wellman says officers found the call was a hoax when they responded to the scene.

The station reports the call is part of a phenomenon called ``swatting'' that is being used by video gamers in a twisted competition where their success is based on the level of response by law enforcement authorities.
