Rapid City population unofficially surpasses 70,000

Rapid City is growing.
The latest population estimate by the planning department shows the count above 70,000, up from around 69,500.
The estimate is based on building permit data.

Mayor Sam Kooiker cites three reasons for the growth:

-retirees moving to the area, including Air Force retirees

-an influx of college students

-and the oil boom in North Dakota.

Kooiker says the population increase not only gives Rapid City bragging rights but it helps when applying for grants.
Of course the estimate is unofficial. The only true count is done by the U.S. Census every ten years.
