Deadwood police arrest library burglary suspect

A 51-year-old man was arrested Thursday for burglary, trespassing and damage to property at the Deadwood Public Library.

Police were dispatched to the library on Wednesday for a burglary alarm.  The subsequent investigation revealed that someone had gained access into the building by breaking two basement windows.  Officers cleared the building and learned that the suspect had fled prior to their arrival.

Investigators reviewed video surveillance and the suspect was positively identified as Jeffery Cavan.

Officer Justin Lux was patrolling in the area of Upper Main Street, and saw Cavan sitting by the side of the road.  Cavan was taken into custody and charged with 3rd Degree Burglary, Intentional Damage to Property and Trespassing.

At the time Jeffrey Cavan was taken into custody,  he had all his personal belongings with him and told Officers he was heading to Cheyenne, Wyoming.
