Conference in Rapid City focuses on oil and gas activities

What does the oil boom in North Dakota mean for South Dakota? Potential opportunities and Economic development.

Those possibilities were discussed at the 9th Annual New Horizons Oil and Gas Conference in Rapid City Thursday.

The conference was hosted by the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. It focuses on oil and gas activities in the Northern Great Plains and Rocky Mountains.

There were several different break-out sessions, one in particular focused on the petroleum industry and economic development.

Vice President of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Institute for 21st Century Energy, Matt Koch said South Dakota is well positioned due to the oil activity in surrounding states like North Dakota and Montana.

"I think you are in a good location to not only supply the oil and gas and energy industry but also perhaps if businesses move in they are going to take advantage of the stable, inexpensive energy that is going to be produced," said Koch.
