A  mountain  lion found in a tree near a Spearfish home was tranquilized and released  Wednesday.

Regional Wildlife Manager John Kanta says his office received a call that the big cat was in a tree, just off exit eight. Kanta says the lion was tranquilized because it didn't present a danger to the public.

Once it fell asleep, wildlife officers nudged him from the tree into a net. He was released a few miles away in a wooded area.

The 43-pound male lion was approximately seven-months-old.
