Chronic illness has Rapid City woman in need of 2nd kidney transplant

A chronic illness has a Rapid City woman in need of a second kidney transplant.

Woope Claymore has a disease called lupus. It's a chronic inflammatory disease that affects various parts of the body.

The disease is attacking the kidney she received in a transplant several years ago from Rapid City resident Jim White. Now she needs a second kidney transplant.

Claymore said she’s been on dialysis since the first transplant.

“I got sick when I was 17-years-old. Then at 19, I got my first transplant from Jim White. That lasted six years. Since then I’ve been on dialysis and doing it myself here at home,” Claymore said.

She hooks herself up to the machine every two hours and takes up to 40 pills a day.

Her father, David Claymore, said managing her treatment and staying afloat financially has been a challenge for the family. His wife even lost a good job because she had to travel with Woope to receive medical treatment.

"It's been hard to financial stay ahead and afloat. We lost a lot of homes and vehicles," David said.

He says the community is rallying around them while they wait for a new kidney, which he says could take three to four months.
