Mead on Australia visit

Wyoming Governor Matt Mead says a recent trip "Down Under" will benefit the Cowboy State's coal industry.

Mead and researchers from the University of Wyoming recently came back from a nearly week long trip to Australia for a coal technology conference. The conference focuses mainly on developing value-added products from coal.

Mead says he also visited Australia's coal ports, where much is shipped to places like Taiwan and South Korea. Mead says Australia recognizes the economic benefits of selling to Asian markets

"We recognize that in Wyoming too. The challenge is how do we get it out of our West Coast ports. And that's something the legislature and I have been working on these last three years. We're making progress, but we've got a ways to go," said Mead.

Australia exports more than 100 million tons of coal each year to Asia.
