Elementary school pulls lanyards after freak accident

A freak accident has prompted the Rapid City school district to pull all lanyards from elementary school students.

That's because a student sustained a serious neck injury when a lanyard he was wearing got stuck in a swing, causing him to choke.

Tami Hagerty said she knew there were dangers on the school playground, but she didn't think something as simple as a lunch ticket would be one of them.

"We had no idea the school was using the lanyard," said Hagerty.

Lanyards are handed out at recess before the lunch hour in order to give the students more time to eat.

But last Thursday, the speedy process resulted in the injury of Hagerty's 8–year–old son Nicholas.

He said he was wearing it was around his neck, turned backwards. When he jumped off the swing, the clip got caught in the chain.

"My feet were straggling up and down and I was body–slammed on my back," said Nicholas.

His mother said if he had been higher up in the swing or if he weighed a little bit more, he probably would have broken his neck.

Nicholas is going to be okay. His mother says he will probably have nothing more than a scar.

However, to ensure nothing like this happens again, the Hagerty's asked the school district to take action.

Katie Bray, assistant superintendent for Rapid City area schools, said, "When the accident occurred and we saw what could happen and we realized the potential, we completely understood the parents concern. We had not realized that it could present a safety threat. Now we have and we've remedied the situation."

"You can't predict every incident on the playground with hundreds on children across the district. But this is something we can control. We can control whether small children wear lanyards out in the playground," Bray said.

All lanyards have been pulled until replacement clips arrive.

The Hagerty's say they want parents to be informed about this hidden danger.

They say they don't want a child to die or become paralyzed from a lanyard.
