Forget sex and drugs; consumer complaints top AG problem

by Jack Siebold, MyTown editor

If you think the biggest problems the South Dakota attorney general deals with are sex and drugs… think again.  It's consumer fraud complaints.

Last year, the attorney general's consumer division fielded 30,677 complaints and recovered more than $9.4 million.  And now that the state Legislature has updated South Dakota's consumer laws — the first time since 1971 – the state has better tools to combat increasingly high-tech scams.

"I think we'll be able to do a better job from a law enforcement standpoint to not only get rid of some of the annoying phone calls and scams but to address those that are really preying on the most vulnerable members of the South Dakota society," Attorney General Marty Jackley said.

The state works with other attorney general offices on many consumer complaints because they involve companies that operate in several states.  An example is the Target credit card breach which is still in the investigation stage.
