Rapid City businessman to run for Sen. Phil Jensen's seat

South Dakota's District 33 has been making headlines recently for its representative, Senator Phil Jensen (R).

Could the district soon have a different representative? A new face in the political realm is tossing his hat into the ring.

David Johnson, Johnson Tree Company president, says he'll be representing the Republican Party in his race for the senate. Johnson says he's been thinking about public office for a decade. He says now is the time to step-up because he is able to step-back a little from his tree business.

Although Senator Jensen has stirred up controversy recently, Johnson says his candidacy is not about Jensen. "This candidacy has nothing to do with the current controversy that's going on with the District 33 seat," said Johnson. "This race is about problems District 33 voters care about."

One issue Johnson says he'll focus on is the mountain pine beetle problem.
