Rapid City has stiff competition to host tournaments

While the South Dakota High School Activities Association continues to hold tournaments across the state, the competition to host is stiff.

The Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls is near completion.

According to Kendra Siemonsma, Special Projects Manager for the City of Sioux Falls, carpet, tile, lighting and seating is being installed for the mid-September opening.

The new events center will seat up to 13,000.  That's in addition to the 6,000 seats available at the current arena on neighboring property.

Construction began in July of 2012.

A new arena at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center is in the planning stages. General Manager, Brian Maliske says an engineering and construction firm has been hired to give the city a firm cost estimate and an architectural drawing.

The first public forum to gather input will take place on March 27.
