A former South Dakota state senator and 2010 gubernatorial candidate has pleaded guilty to illegally killing a mountain lion.
According to prosecutors, Gordon Howie, 64, pled guilty to the misdemeanor charge Wednesday.
Howie shot the 84 pound lion while it was in a trap intended for bobcats. When the lion was seized and inspected at the regional office, the biologist discovered the big cat was pregnant with three kittens.
Howie and his son, Shadrach, both were given suspended 90-day jail sentences and ordered to pay a $200 fine. In addition, both are banned from hunting and trapping for a year.
