March Madness is here and offices across KOTA Territory are getting in on the fun. However, some say it can take away from productivity at work.
For some businesses in Rapid City it's a way to connect with co-workers. And workers say they can still be productive.
March Madness is in the air at Buffalo Wild Wings.
"We have everybody and their dog filling out brackets. I know I've taken some time out of my day and filled out a few," said Jesse Scheitler, a manager at Buffalo Wild Wings in Rapid City.
In the spirit of March Madness they'll have freethrow contests and different prizes for people who fill out brackets. Offices are also getting in on the fun. At the Rapid City Convention and Visitors Bureau, Domico Rodriguez looks at filled out brackets in his office pool.
"This one here is very laid back. There's no true rules the point system. Everything varies everywhere you go and whoever you play with. This is more of a friendly bet," said Rodriguez, Director of Sports and Events at the Rapid City Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Rodriguez says people who don't know a lot about basketball end up doing well in their brackets.
"A lot of times those people who enter these pools may not know the most about the NCAA tournament but they tend to do better because they don't over think the process and the teams. Sometimes they'll even just pick a team based on a mascot," said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez says he sees how some bosses think it affects productivity. But he says there are ways to not let it distract you.
"It's something we can follow when we get home from work. Some bosses don't like it. Some business encourage it. It's good staff morale and kind of a camaraderie thing," said Rodriguez.
Back at Buffalo Wild Wings, business is booming and they expect it to be this way the next couple weeks.
"March Madness has something to do with it," said Scheitler.
