Rapid City Schools teacher Justin Speck wins educator of the year Award

By Barrett Phillips

Members of the Rapid City School Board selected their educator of the year.

Central High School Theatre Director, Justin Speck, is this year's winner. He is now eligible to apply for regional educator of the year.

Speck was also the regional winner of the Heart of the Arts Award and is eligible to apply for the National Heart of the Arts Award.

"I stand in excellent company. There are a lot of wonderful educators in the Rapid City Area Schools and just to be a part of that is award enough," said Justin Speck.

The educator of the year is selected for his or her outstanding contributions to the teaching profession, and to students.

"He doesn't just treat you like one student out of 100. You are his student and he wants you to learn as much as you can while you're under his guidance; and he treats you as an individual person, not just a part of the majority," said Timarie Bergman, Junior at Central High School.

If Speck wins regional educator of the year he will be eligible to apply for state educator of the year.
