TSA Pre-Check starts at Rapid City Regional Airport

Passengers will notice a change at Rapid City Regional Airport.

On Tuesday, the Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, expanded its Pre-Check expedited operations.

It will be faster to get through security due to the new Pre-Check lane. Passengers who qualify won't have to take off their light jacket, belt, or shoes.

In addition to allowing pre-cleared passengers to leave on certain items, they will also be able to keep their laptop in its case and some liquids in a carry-on.

Some people, like military members and frequent fliers, automatically qualify. Other passengers can apply for Pre-Check at the Department of Homeland Security website for $85.

TSA representatives and passengers said this is a convenient option.

"Most people are very positive about it. Just leaving their shoes on is the biggest compliment and convenience for people where it is less hassle for them," said Mark Heisey, TSA Federal Security Director for South Dakota.

"I think it would be quicker, and faster, and easier. As long as security is still the same, and everything is safe with it, I think it's great," said Jeff Beehler, a passenger.

Including Rapid City, there are now 118 airports nationwide that offer the Pre-Check option.

Once a person is approved for TSA Pre-Check, they then visit the Enrollment Center at 1727 West Main Street in Rapid City in person to verify their identity.

To apply online for TSA Pre-Check, visit the Department of Homeland Security website.
