Children First: Cookie sales offer life lessons

Buying Girl Scout cookies is about more than just handing over money for a box.

For the girl, it's about the life skills gained from the sale.

The practice of handling money and counting change back to customers is a skill in money management that can help throughout life.

They also learn communication skills by asking people to buy cookies and how to handle rejection when people say no.  Plus the girls learn the value of teamwork and working hard.

Sarah McReynolds, a Girl Scout mother, says that's not all. "They just automatically are learning self-independence, self-awareness and self-confidence," says McReynolds.

According to the Girl Scouts website, 70% of professional women were Girl Scouts.
