SD Legislature poised to pass gun control bill

Despite an aggressive e-mail campaign against a bill designed to keep guns from dangerously mentally ill people, a South Dakota Senate committee passes the bill on to the floor for a final vote.

By a 5-2 vote, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved House Bill 1229, which would keep guns from certain people with mental issues by adding their names to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.  First, a person has to be involuntarily committed and be a danger to him or herself or the public.  Also, at a future time, that person could have his or her Second Amendment rights restored.
