Rapid City police investigate pursuit, suicide

Posted:

The Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff's Office are investigating a pursuit and apparent suicide that occurred overnight.

At approximately 5 a.m. on Sunday, an officer spotted a pickup at a gas station on Omaha Street. The officer discovered the driver had a revoked license and was on parole for felony DUI. The officer initiated a traffic stop near 5th and Meade. The driver stopped, but fled in the vehicle when the officer approached. Police say two passengers bailed out of the vehicle during the ensuing pursuit, and were not located. Police decided to terminate the pursuit for safety reasons.

At 12:45 Monday morning, an officer spotted the suspect vehicle on Cross Street. The officer initiated a traffic stop near the intersection of Quincy Street and West Boulevard, but the suspect again refused to pull over.

Police say the suspect ran multiple red lights and stop signs as he led police on a pursuit through town, and came to a stop after crashing into a tree at 3825 Odde Drive. When police approached the vehicle, they found the suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect, Timothy Vickerman, age 36 of Rapid City, died at the scene. Vickerman was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

Detectives from the RCPD and Pennington County Sheriff's Office are investigating.
