Largest mountain lion of season killed illegally

The largest mountain lion of the season was killed illegally in Lawrence County.
The 153 pound male was killed near Deadwood on Feb. 15 by Gregory Johnson of Lead.

According to the complaint, Johnson shot the lion illegally from the road. Additionally, he was cited for exceeding the maximum rounds of cartridges in a firearm while big game hunting. In other words he was using a firearm capable of holding more than six rounds.

According to South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Regional Supervisor Mike Kintigh, two people have been charged with illegal kills this season.  A few others are being investigated.
"We basically have two kinds of rules in general. We have rules that are there for a biological purpose to manage the population. Then, we have social regulations, social regulations generally try to address ethics," said Kintigh.
Kintigh said two or three illegal kills are typical in any given year.

The other case, which is in Pennington County, it is in the process of being filed with the clerks office.
