The fire fighting community is a brotherhood. Whenever one of their own passes away, whether in the line of duty or after their career has ended, hundreds show up in support of a fallen brother or sister.
That was the case Thursday for recently retired Rockerville Volunteer Fire Chief, Paul Smith, who died suddenly at the age of 55.
Smith was a member of the Rockerville fire department for 25 years and served 12 years as the fire chief.
Friends say he was always there to listen and always looking to improve things to make them better. "I'm going to miss him. The fire service is going to miss him. South Dakota is going to miss him," said Smith's cousin, Gorden Sabo.
Among his many accomplishments we're told Smith played an instrumental role in getting new trucks for the Rockerville fire department.
