Coventry Red Horse does her homework every night in a hotel.
"It's okay. It's not great. I would like to be able to have my own room again and sleep in my own bed," said Red Horse.
Like Red Horse, more and more children in Rapid City face homelessness. Anita Deranleau, works with those kids and their families.
"Our goal is to eliminate all obstacles to education, so it's a case by case decision making process where we speak with the family and see what obstacles we can help them overcome," said Deranleau, McKinney Vento Coordinator for the Rapid City School District.
Deranleau said those kids may face homelessness again as adults.
"Poverty is poverty and when you grow up in poverty it is a very hard cycle to get out of. And some families will be able to overcome and as they overcome their children will learn the skills to exist outside of poverty but some families won't," said Deranleau.
Red Horse said if she does face similar challenges as an adult she'll know what to do.
"Personally, I'm not very worried because living like this, I've been homeless three times before, and I've learned to deal with as minimal, like live with very minimal. So living on my own I would probably live with as little as possible," said Red Horse.
Her mother believes her kids can have a different future.
"It's not necessarily written in stone that just because you grew up having these instances doesn't mean that you will always have that," said Riquel Red Horse.
But Red Horse hopes her future will be different.
"I've seen the stress that it's put on my parents and other people in that same situation, and I don't want to go through that same stress," she said.
While being homeless has its struggles Red Horse said she's learned a lot from the experience.
"It's kind of made me realize I need to work harder in my academics, so I can go on to college and get a better job and support myself. And it's also brought me closer to my family and I realize how important they are to me now, because you work as a unit and you support each other," said Red Horse.
