Organ donation bill gets support from RCRH

By Barrett Phillips

The South Dakota legislature passed a bill allowing people to become organ donors online.

Rapid City Regional Hospital supports the legislation and hopes this alternate process will recruit more donors.

Before this legislation, those who wanted to donate organs could only elect to do so on their drivers license, which is renewed once every five years. The online process will also provide documentation so families will have no dispute over what their loved ones would have wanted.

"If we have more information about people wanting to be donors then we have current information, in which, to use should we have a patient death and ultimately then the opportunity for transplant improves," said Lois Ames, Administrative Director of Patient Services.

Eighteen South Dakotans die each day waiting for an organ transplant.
