WASHINGTON (AP) - Rep. Kristi Noem says the threat of human sex trafficking needs more attention from Congress and police.
Noem says she used to see such trafficking as a problem only in parts of Europe or southeast Asia. But she says people are being exploited every day, including in her home state of South Dakota.
Noem spoke at a congressional subcommittee hearing Wednesday that focused on ways to fight human trafficking. She has made it a signature issue, working on legislation to address the issue. Earlier this week she hosted an event focused on the issue in South Dakota.
Noem says it's important to find new approaches to the issue and make sure survivors are protected and perpetrators are prosecuted.
