When the occasion arises, police dogs are often sent into high-risk situations first, before their human partners.
The Rapid City Police Department is making the situation safer for their dogs in their K9 Unit.
Police Dog Xander has been with the Rapid City police since 2012. He didn't have a custom-made bulletproof vest of his own.
So his handler, Officer Jason LaHaie, applied for a vest through an organization called Vested Interest in K9s
. ""He protects me, I mean he'll do anything for me," said LaHaie. "That's the one nice thing about having a dog as a partner, you know for sure if something happens that dog is right there to help you. So to be able to help him is nice."
Currently, Vested Interest is doing a campaign with 'Groupon.'
For just $10 people can donate towards bulletproof vests for dogs all over the country. A vest costs $950.
