The Rapid City Polar Plunge was one of the 15 Polar Plunges across the state. A crowd gathered at the Rushmore Mall parking lot to witness brave plungers take the a leap into freezing cold water to raise money for Special Olympics.
Dave Stratton, former Rapid City police lieutenant and Rapid City's Polar Plunge organizer, says these events get people interested in Special Olympics. "We get a chance to talk about Special Olympics and what a great program it is," said Stratton.
Stratton says the Polar Plunge in the area has really grown. "We have more and more people today that know about Special Olympics and benefits of being involved in this organization," said Stratton.
There were 258 plungers and they raises $49,000.
The next Polar Plunge will be in Spearfish on February 23,2014.
