Design team rethinks Rapid City arena proposal

Months of planning, meetings and proposed budgets were all thrown out the window Thursday as those involved with repurposing the Don Barnett Arena said its time for a clean slate.

David Murphy, with Crawford Architects, said Thursday was the first day of a strategic process that he anticipates will go until the beginning of August  and as for all the old numbers that have been thrown around, he says throw them out.

Those tasked with the project believe starting with a  clean slate is the way to go."Since this is the first day today we came with a clean slate," said Murphy. "there are no preconceptions, there's no anticipated or expected seating capacity for an arena expansion."Those tasked with the construction and design want to hear from stakeholders before any plans are made.

There will be four other meetings planned in the future to discuss the arena expansion, but dates for those meetings have not yet been set.
