First candidate officially in Senate race

by Jack Siebold, MyTown Editor

Stace Nelson must be anxious to get into the mix of the race for a seat in the U.S. Senate.

His campaign announced Thursday that Nelson was notified he is the first Republican Senate candidate on the South Dakota ballot.  The Office of the Secretary of State confirmed that Nelson has surpassed the required signatures needed.  Nelson had more than 2,650 signatures on his petitions.

While Nelson is the first to file, other Republicans are also working on a Senate campaign, including former Governor Mike Rounds, State Senator Larry Rhoden, Dr. Annette Bosworth and Jason Ravnsborg.  They have until March 25 to file petitions for a spot on the June 3 primary ballot.

There is only one confirmed Democrat candidate, Rick Weiland, hoping to replace retiring Senator Tim Johnson.
