Grant to fund "pocket park" in North Rapid City

By Barrett Phillips

An idea for a "pocket park" in North Rapid City is taking shape.

Thanks to a $15,000 grant awarded to Neighborworks and the College Park Block Club, a vacant lot in College park will once again be a functional playground. This same grant will be used to build or fix up 2,000 playgrounds across the country.

The College Park Block Club received support from the city of Rapid City to create the "pocket park" in April of 2013.

With the increase of children in the neighborhood, and its proximity to schools, supporters say the park fills a void.

"This is just going to be another place that kids can enjoy. They can learn and play with their friends and have a safe environment to do it," said Stephany Valkenburg, Marketing Director for Neighborworks.

A community meeting regarding the park is scheduled for Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. at General Beadle Elementary School.
