Rapid City's Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park closed for trail repairs

President's Day weekend's nice weather sent people out of the house and onto the bike trails. But Rapid City's Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park's trails were severely damaged and are closed.

The park was already closed because of muddy trails, but bikers, hikers and runners apparently chose to ignore the closure. The privately owned park that is open to the public received extensive damage over the weekend.

Jeff Denison, member of the Hanson- Larsen Memorial Park board, says repairing the trails will be expensive.

"They are an ongoing maintenance for us and we probably spend a $100,000 dollars a year keeping the trail up and all this damage is just going to up our expenses considerable," said Denison. "It takes machinery and its takes operators to do this kind of work."

The park will be closed until the trails are repaired. Denison reminds trail users not to ride, walk or run when the trails are wet.
