KOTA News Extra: 39 Club

For more than 30 years, the 39 Club of Rapid City has been hosting dance socials for people looking for an evening out on the town. And these aren't your everyday social gatherings, members and guests dance the night away to traditional ballroom dance tunes, eat, drink, and visit with friends.

They have dances six times a year and their Valentine's dance was all about romance. It was Annette Kissinger and her husband Derek's first dance with the club. Annette Kissinger says it was the perfect way to spend their Valentine's weekend.  "There's something sweet about dancing with the one you love," she said.  "I love to dance and I wanted him to come with me. We decided to take the plunge."

Derek Kissinger says he isn't much of a dancer but he enjoyed the club."It's difficult for me, I won't deny it's something I struggle with a lot and I have to work at it."

But the 39 Club offers lessons before the dances. "It's great that they actually do a lesson ahead of time so that when you dance later you don't feel so silly. So you can actually learn," said Annette Kissinger.

And while it's new to the Bissingers, Maren Kelley has been in the club for 20 years.  "It's a nice evening with dinner and dancing,"  said Kelley.

Kelley and her husband owe their commitment to the club to people they've met. "We've made such good friends with this group," said Kelley. "It's a wonderful group of people."

Lona Belden, a 39 Club board member, says long lasting friendships are not the only things that make this club stand out. "You can't get this type of music downtown at the local bars," said Belden." We each have our own little niche."

Each dance has a theme and live "Big Band" to keep club members and their guests on the floor all night. "We have our own way of dancing and we just enjoy music," said Belden. "Music is good for your health and it's good for your soul."

Annette Kissinger says that a night out dancing is different from other date nights she has had. "When you're dancing with somebody you have to focus on what they are doing, you have to figure out what they are thinking, you have to follow, and for the men they have to lead," said Kissinger. "So to me it brings you closer as a couple."

The next dance is in March for St. Patrick's Day.
