City issues 3-day suspension to Rapid City strip club

Posted:

The owner of Shotgun Willies, Rapid City's only strip club, was given a three-day suspension of his Adult Oriented Business (AOB) license following a handful of citations that were issued by police last year.

Monday afternoon at a special city council hearing, four detectives testified about the activities they witnessed while conducting undercover compliance checks. They described dancers performing simulated sex acts while semi–nude. Others witnesses ladies accepting money while semi-nude, which is in violation of the city ordinance.

Police Chief Steve Allender testified about protocol concerning AOB compliance checks.

Stephen Wesolick, the attorney for Shotgun Willies' owner Aaron Johnson, alleged that detectives did an excessive number of checks and that there's room for interpretation in the alleged simulated sex acts described by the officers.

At the end of the six-hour hearing and a hard fought battle between both Wesolick and city attorney Joel Landeen, a decision was finally made.

"Three days is three days but it's a lot less than 30 days which is what the city has been seeking," said Wesolick.  "In a lot of ways we do consider that as a bit of a victory if you will," said Wesolick.

Wesolick said they planned on going to federal court if the council had decided on a 30 days suspension which is what the Rapid City Police Department recommended.

Landeen said he hopes the whole process of a hearing will encourage the owner of the establishment to make some changes.

"This certainly wasn't I don't think a pleasant experience for the owner of the establishment and hopefully they'll be changes in the future," said Landeen.

The suspension begins Tuesday.
