Ranchers hit by blizzard will tap into Farm Bill - KOTA Territory News

Ranchers hit by blizzard will tap into Farm Bill; what does it mean?

Ranchers devastated by the October blizzard have been working hard for months to re–bound.

Now they're getting assistance through checks from the Rancher Relief Fund and eventually from the recently passed Farm Bill.

But while the Farm Bill will reimburse producers up to 75% of their losses, it's difficult to nail down just how much that will actually help ranchers.

Marvin Jobgen, a rancher, says 75% is a good number, but he asks 75% of what?

Jobgen says he's worried producers will be reimbursed for what cows were worth in October, but the market value now is much higher. That will make it harder for ranchers to buy cows now.

Jobgen says producers need to know what they'll be getting financially. "It's hard to make business decisions without hard facts," said Jobgen.

While money from the Farm Bill won't be available for another few months, $4 million dollars worth of checks from the Rancher Relief Fund have been written and gone to ranchers.
