Amber Alert leads to quick arrest, children found unharmed

Posted:

An Amber Alert issued Thursday morning lead to the speedy arrest of a man accused of taking two young children and threatening violence.

Just after 8 this morning, police surrounded a Knollwood Town Houses apartment on North Maple Avenue.  Inside, 27-year-old Skye Levi Burnham-Endicott, as well as the girls, 1 year old and 1 month old.  Police then stormed the apartment, rescuing the girls.

Police say Burnham-Endicott, also known as Eddie Little, brutally assaulted the children's mother Wednesday night at the same apartment complex; stabbing her and stomping on her head.   Neighbor Rusty Lee Shulz Jr helped the victim.  "I heard someone screaming for help.  I opened the door to let her in so she could get a hold of someone," Shulz said.  "She asked us to call the cops; said that someone was trying to kill her."

Witnesses say Burnham-Endicott then took the girls, threatening to harm them as well as threatening suicide.  When police arrived on scene Burnham-Endicott and the girls were missing.  According to police, Burnham-Endicott had already attempted to fill a bathtub to drown them.

Assistant Rapid City Police Chief Karl Jegeris said this was one of the most terrifying situations he's ever dealt with.  "In my history here at the department, besides a domestic violence homicide, this is one of the most brutal violent incidents that I've been a part of," Jegeris said.  This also was Rapid City's first Amber Alert.

The children's mother is doing okay.  She refused medical attention at the scene.

As for Burnham-Endicott, he faces charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault and domestic violence.  Additional charges are possible.

Burnham-Endicott was hiding in the apartment of an acquaintance.  Police did not say if that person will face charges for harboring a wanted man.
