Rapid City Council will decide on $500,000 study for arena expansion

A $500,000 study will determine whether the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center's arena will be expanded. But the Rapid City Council has to decide to move forward with the study.

The Barnett Arena could be in for an update but first a study must conducted to determine if it is a viable option.

The Rapid City Council will be asked to approve the consultants' fees. The Construction Manager Agreement with M.A. Mortenson Company says the fees will not exceed $115,000. And the agreement with ARC International, Inc. says the fees will be up to $385,000.

Rod Johnson, city engineer and the project manager for the arena expansion, says the project's future will be hanging on this study. "So depending on what this study shows, it obviously would determine whether we move forward with the project or not,"  said Johnson.

If the city council approves to fund the study, it will take about six months to complete.
