82nd Civil Support Team prepares for terrorist attack at Mount Rushmore

By Barrett Phillips

A Hazardous Materials drill was conducted Tuesday at Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

The 82nd Civil Support Team, Army North, Rapid City and Keystone Fire Departments all participated in the event to better prepare for terrorist attacks.

The drill was constructed to test the multi agency team's ability to assemble, respond, and mitigate any hazard or terrorist attack that may occur regardless of weather conditions.

"It's not as cold as it has been here but it's still a little chilly. The snow adds an interesting wrinkle to it. So, these guys train in all kinds of weather because they may be called upon to respond in all kinds of weather," said Jeff Taylor, observer/controller/trainer.

Taylor said drills like these can take hours or even days to complete.
