Tots go for wild ride in Mutton Bustin' at Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo

Kids got the chance to prove they can be cowgirls and cowboys, too. As part of the North American Sheep Dog Trials in Rapid City, kids between the ages of three to seven got to participate in Mutton Bustin'.

Twelve children competed in the event. Besides the age requirement, riders have to be less than 60 pounds. Organizers said it was exciting and fun to watch.

"Everybody is scared and it's such a great time it gets them to participate in something they usually don't have a chance to," said NanCee Maynard, who is on the Central States Fair Board of Directors.

"MidContinent has sponsored Mutton Bustin' for several years and it's something we look forward to every year. We try to be involved in the community and this is just one of those fun opportunities to do that," said Jon Lundgren, MidContinent Operations Manager.

Josef Meehan, 7, is the 2014 Mutton Bustin' Champion. This is his second time winning the event. He said he's wanted to do this for as long as he can remember.

"I've been a cowboy since I was two years old. That's how I got into riding sheep," Meehan said.

The 2nd place winner was Emma Tuscher, 5, and the third place winner was Miranda Lee Rude, 5. Winners received trophies, belt buckles, farm sets, and a Toys R Us gift card.
