Rapid City Blockbuster stores survive cutbacks

Rapid City's two locally owned Blockbuster video stores will keep the doors open amid concerns that the parent company has announced that it's closing its video stores.

Blockbuster has been cutting back on the number of stores they are operating due to competition like Netflix.

Eric Seljeskog, owner of the Rapid City Blockbuster locations, said they had three options, close down, go independent, or become a licensee. According to Seljeskog, becoming a licensee seemed like the logical choice, so they keep the Blockbuster name which will help them compete against the competition.

"Initially, it was a pretty good hit, but it's bouncing back now that people are realizing that their not getting what they wanted in a timely manner, that they can come in here and find a lot of copies a lot of selections here" said Seljeskog.

Another benefit, according to Seljeskog, is that they get more freedom to manage the store in a way that would attract more local people.
