An 87-year-old man was killed Wednesday morning following an accident near Piedmont.

Gordon Nightingale died at the scene around 7:00 a.m.

His van was struck by 67-year-old Kenneth Heston's vehicle.

South Dakota Highway Patrol Captain Kevin Karley says Heston was driving westbound on Interstate 90 when he lost control of his vehicle and slid across the Interstate on to a service road where he hit Nightingale.

Heston received serious but non life-threatening injuries.

Captain Karley says he will most likely be charged but it's not clear what he's facing just yet.

In addition to the fatal accident near Piedmont, there were nine other non-injury accidents due to the icy conditions.
