School of Mines and WiSE begin annual tradition

Women from Western South Dakota gathered at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Tuesday to inspire other women to pursue math and science related careers.

This was the first year students in the WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) held the event, and they plan to continue this new tradition every year.

"So our goal, really, is to prepare women for the next step in science by connecting industry, government, academics, professors, and K–12 professional women," said Megan Burke, Engineer at RESPEC in water and natural resources.

Director of recruitment and programs at the South Dakota School of Mines Technology, Lisa Carlson says only 24 percent of enrollment are women.
