Deadwood gamblers may soon be able to roll or spin

By Jack Siebold, MyTown Editor

Will Deadwood gamblers be able to toss the dice and spin the wheel?  Maybe.  It depends first on the South Dakota Legislature and then voters.

Representative Timothy Johns (R-District 31, which includes Deadwood) is the prime sponsor on House Joint Resolution 1001, allowing the voters to decide in the next general election if the city of Deadwood can add roulette, keno and craps games.  The voters ultimately make the decision since to make the change, the state constitution has to be amended.

The entire net municipal proceeds of the additional games would, just like current games, go to the Historic Restoration and Preservation of Deadwood.

On the state Senate side, the main sponsor is Bob Ewing (R-District 31).
