Jury finds Rapid City man guilty of brutal assault

Posted: Updated:

Jurors find a Rapid City man guilty of aggravated assault for the brutal beating of his girlfriend on New Year's Day last year.

Luke Elk Nation, 29, is facing 40 years behind bars for the beating that left his ex-girlfriend with life-long scars. She testified that he beat her with a glass candle stick holder, broke a lamp over her head and repeatedly kicked and hit her.

Jurors also convicted Elk Nation of possession of a controlled substance for the methamphetamine found in the South Dakota Rose Motel room where they were staying.

While he was charged with kidnapping for allegedly holding his girlfriend in the room against her will, jurors were deadlocked on the charge. Elk Nation will be sentenced on the other two charges at the end of February.

Elk Nation is also facing three witness tampering charges for threatening the victim that have yet to be resolved.
