SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) _ South Dakota's members of Congress hope a conference committee approves a farm bill within days to bring needed relief to ranchers who lost thousands of cattle in an early fall blizzard.
Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson and leaders of the South Dakota Farmers Union and Stockgrowers Association held a news conference Tuesday in Sioux Falls urging quick action.
They also warned against modifying the Country of Origin Labeling law that tells consumers where their food comes from.
Republican Sen. John Thune says negotiators are close to reaching agreement on the major sticking points, including livestock payments, dairy policy and the labeling law.
Republican Rep. Kristi Noem says she believes it's possible to protect consumers and maintain a strong trade relationship with neighboring countries.
