Children First: Destination Imagination teaches life-long skills

Posted:

Middle and high school students from Box Elder are working through challenges and thinking creatively as part of Destination Imagination.

"I just like having fun with my friends, building stuff, like thinking creatively," said Mason Wieman, a Destination Imagination participant.

Not only are having fun, but they'll also use the skills they learn here later in life.

"Say you are in a big corporation you have to work with people, and by working with people here you really get used to doing that," said Andrew Canaan, a Destination Imagination participant.

Some kids join after seeing their siblings participate.

"I watched and just thought it was so cool, so a couple of us we started a team in second grade and we've been going since," said Jace Canaan, a Destination Imagination participant.

Organizers said they love seeing the confidence grow in kids.

"At the beginning of the season they are not very confident in themselves all of the time and they don't have the skills to be able to solve some of the challenges. By the end of the season they are very confident," said Chandra Canaan, a Destination Imagination Regional Director for Western South Dakota.

They are practicing now, but soon they'll put everything to the test with competitions. First regional's, then if they qualify they'll move on to the state and then the global competition.

"We've never not been to state and we just been getting better and better," said Jace Canaan.

It costs money to go to the competitions, so the group has to fundraise. They are having a spaghetti dinner and silent auction Sunday, January 19, at the Moose Lodge in Rapid City from 1 to 5 pm.
