Bishop of Rapid City supports death penalty abolishment bill

Posted:

A bill abolishing the death penalty in South Dakota will be introduced during this legislative session. The Bishop of Rapid City encouraged his parishioners to contact their local lawmakers to support the bill.

With the Catholic Church involved with the issue, religion and politics have converged.

Bishop Robert Gruss says his plea for the abolishment of the death penalty goes beyond religion and politics."The death penalty and the desire to appeal it, is not a political issue in my mind, it's not a religious issue in my mind, it's a life issue," said Gruss.

There are 88 parishes in the Diocese of Rapid City.
