Rapid City street sink hole causes morning accident

Tuesday morning, a man suffered minored injuries after his vehicle fell in a sink hole on Corral Drive in West Rapid City.

A few years ago, a water main broke in the area causing water and sediment to move throughout the area. The suspected cause of the sink hole is that a large void developed under the street.

Public Works Director Terry Wolterstorff says the city planned on replacing a number of cement panels around the city. But they didn't do it in time to prevent an accident.

Barriers were setup while crews work to fix the gaping hole.

Wolfterstorf says they were not aware of the magnitude of the void in the pavement on this street because that is difficult to determine.
