Governor urges training for needed jobs in South Dakota

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) _ Gov. Dennis Daugaard has proposed some new efforts to train people for jobs critical to South Dakota's economic development.

In his State of the State address to start the 2014 session of the Legislature, the governor says he will use development money to help school districts strengthen technical courses. He also is providing more money for scholarships in critical fields for South Dakota's four technical schools.

In addition, Daugaard says he will organize meetings around the state so business and community leaders can discuss ideas for developing the state's workforce.

The governor notes that a plan to use a company to recruit workers from outside the state has not worked out well, but other efforts will be made to attract people for critically needed jobs in South Dakota.
