Black Hawk man receives maximum sentence for assaulting trooper

A Black Hawk man is given the maximum sentence of 25 years in prison for assaulting a trooper.

In December, 23-year-old Marcus Onken admitted to throwing a cell phone at a state trooper last March.

On Monday morning, the trooper couldn't be present for sentencing but his family and other troopers were there in support. Prosecutors said this is the third time Onken has assaulted law enforcement. They said he is violent and dangerous and deserves the maximum sentence. They also said the trooper suffered a serious injury to his eye and he could still face blindness.

Seventh Circuit Judge Jeff Davis said he would recommend that Onken receive psychiatric care and alcohol treatment while in prison.

Onken will get credit for the 289 days he has already served in jail.
