Local lawmaker weighs in on possible distracted-driving bill

South Dakota remains one of the few states without a ban on texting while driving.  But it remains to be seen if South Dakota lawmakers will follow suit.

Currently 41 states have laws against distracted driving.

Texting while driving has already been banned on Pennington County roads. Commissioners say they hoped it would bring the distracted driving issue to the city and state level.

Pennington County Commissioner Ron Buskerud says he hopes a bill be presented and passed during this year's legislative session. "I got a hunch it'll be a battle in the legislatures, and how things are, there will be compromise made and so I anticipate that there will be some type of law," said Buskerud.

Surrounding states North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and Wyoming all have some type of distracted-driving ban.
