Three people were seriously injured in a crash that happened shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday night. The accident happened during a pursuit with Rapid City Police officers.
The chase began in the 500 block of Lindbergh Avenue when an officer stopped the vehicle for a broken headlight. The driver decided to take off, and the pursuit began. A firearm was tossed out of the vehicle around Horace Mann Pool. Once the suspect vehicle was northbound on Haines Avenue, police say the driver increased speed to approximately 50 MPH, and crashed into a light pole as it tried to turn east onto Disk Drive.
The driver was trapped in the vehicle and it caught fire. Officers were able to extinguish the fire and the Rapid City Fire Department extricated the driver from the vehicle. All three people in the vehicle, two men and a woman were transferred to Rapid City Regional Hospital with serious injuries.
Officers found additional firearms and other weapons, including a sawed off shotgun, a handgun with an altered serial number, and suspected methamphetamine and paraphernalia.
The driver, Ryan Shot With Arrow, 19, was treated and released from the hospital and has been arrested and charged with: Possession of a Firearm with altered serial numbers, Possession of a controlled Substance, Possession of a Controlled Weapon, Ingesting a Controlled Substance and Aggravated Eluding Law Enforcement. The investigation is continuing and the additional charges against the passengers are pending.
In a press release, Rapid City Police Assistant Chief Karl Jegeris said, "This was an unfortunate circumstance; however a violent criminal, drugs, and many dangerous weapons have been successfully removed from our community."
